Hydro Power

Run-of-the-river hydro projects harness the natural flow of rivers to generate electricity.

They work by diverting an environmentally sustainable quantity of river water into a turbine for power production, which then rejoins the river afterwards. This ensures natural flow patterns are maintained, minimising disruption to ecosystems and supporting biodiversity.

Context

No two hydro sites are the same, but typically require consistent water flow and reasonable height differences in the watercourse between the water intake and the generating plant.
