Solar Power

Solar farms are one of the most cost effective ways of generating renewable energy.

Solar panels harness the power of the sun to heat, cool and light our homes and businesses. In combination with a battery system, solar farms can provide power when it is needed and can also power businesses and homes directly.

From site selection, design and planning, through to connection, permissions and trading arrangements, GreenPower is a developer capable of delivering financeable solar projects, and has been developing a strong pipeline of solar projects in the UK.

Context

Agricultural land or former brownfield sites that are more than 40 acres make good locations for solar farms, especially if there is close proximity to a grid connection point. Just 0.7% of UK farmland would need to be repurposed as solar farms in order to hit government targets. A solar farm can also become a biodiversity hotspot, fantastic for wildlife, especially good for pollinators. They can be grazed by sheep, used to produce honey – there are many benefits and opportunities – and by diversifying farm income, can sustain farming in the face of a changing climate from which food production faces its main threat.

Case study: Dunblane Centre rooftop solar PV installation

The Dunblane Centre is a charity and was built from the funds donated to the community following the tragedy at Dunblane Primary School in March 1996.

When a Trustee from the Centre asked if GreenPower could make a donation to the Centre we were keen to help. GreenPower has agreed to fund the purchase and installation of a 50kW rooftop solar array consisting of 96 solar modules, to be installed on the rooftop of the Dunblane Centre. The electricity generated by the modules will be used directly by the building when there is sufficient demand for it, displacing mains supplied electricity and hence reducing utility bills. When there is insufficient demand for the solar generated electricity it will be simply exported to the mains supply.

The installation will be carried out by Lynx Sustainable Solutions who have a vast amount of experience of roof top solar installations.

Calculations suggest that current annual savings should be between £5,000 and £9,000 per year depending on how much of the mains suppled electricity can be displaced.

“Helping the Centre to reduce its yearly electrical running costs by installing a solar PV system seemed the best way to help. The solar panels are also helping the Centre to reduce its environmental impact.”
