Scottish Elections 2026 – get involved, make a difference
You can help make a difference in the election, not just by voting – but by quizzing candidates in your local area about climate change and renewable energy. You might ask them things like:
- Do you support the science of climate change and the need for a rapid shift to renewable energy?
- Do you support onshore renewable energy like wind and solar farms?
- Do you agree it is the jobs in renewables that will make the transition happen, so what are your plans to support the industry?
You can find all of your local candidates, and how to contact them, via this link: Find candidates for the Scottish Parliament election
Some renewable and climate bodies have produced their own ‘manifesto’ for the Scottish election. These include more information about the issues and policies that our politicians should act on to enable action on climate change.
The Solar industry for example has one here: Solar Energy Scotland | Manifesto 2025
Scottish Renewables has one here: Scottish Renewables 2026 Manifesto
All the parties have published manifestos, and are widely available online.
Why new nuclear power is a bad idea.
There is some debate in Scotland and the UK about whether new nuclear power stations should be built as part of Scotland’s future energy landscape. We at GreenPower say it is not needed, and actually damages and dilutes the effort needed to properly tackle climate change.
We conducted an opinion poll, through a respected survey company, of over 2000 Scottish voters to see what Scots thought of nuclear, renewables and oil and gas, in relation to reducing energy bills, tackling climate change and providing long term energy security. Renewables was by far and away the preferred technology.
