Call to join the Powering Futures Renewable Energy Network
GreenPower is proud to support the Powering Futures Schools Programme again this academic year and we’re calling for other renewable businesses to join us. The ambition is to support a strong collective voice for renewables with young people across Scotland – helping thousands better understand the positive contribution the sector is already making and the opportunity it represents for Scotland’s future.
Already well established across 30 local authority areas, this SCQF Level 6 qualification is designed to develop the meta-skills young people need for their next step – whether they go into employment, an apprenticeship, college or university. Participants work in teams to create solutions to one of five real challenges set by industry, brought to life by in-class mentors from partner businesses, culminating in a presentation to panels of business leaders in March.
Powering Futures wants to collectively develop one of these challenges with the renewables sector. GreenPower is one of a number of businesses already involved, and we are keen to see this network expand further. The main focus is on creating awareness – helping young people understand more about why renewables matter to Scotland, the positive impact the sector’s projects are having and what they could mean for their communities and their futures.
This year, the renewables challenge will focus on community wealth building, showing young people real examples of what is already happening, then asking teams to develop their own ideas for how a community wealth building fund could create positive, lasting benefits within a community. This opens up the renewables story to every young person, not only those already interested in engineering, STEM or a career in the sector.
We don’t believe this challenge should be owned by any individual renewables company – we want the sector to back this programme collectively, giving good geographic and industry coverage across Scotland and allowing businesses to share the effort while creating greater national impact.
“We’re extremely proud of the partnership GreenPower has built with Powering Futures over the past three years. This year’s renewables challenge provides a great opportunity to expand awareness of the industry and promote the opportunities available to young people in their next steps. We want more companies from across renewables to come together and back Powering Futures and hopefully encourage many of the participants that the Energy Transition is something to get excited about, both for the benefits it can deliver to nature and communities, and for the jobs it can provide, both now and across their lifetimes.” – Nick Fennell, Development Manager, GreenPower
